Writer Bob Stevens said in an interview that Dewey's story-line came from his own childhood. "I thought, 'Hey a tame fly. I'll call him Tony,'" Stevens recalled. "I made a little bed for it. You probably don't want to hear the rest." The original story line had Dewey making friends with a shoe.
